SICKNESS, DEATH, & DYING
Partnering the Pain and Dying with Confidence
Preparing for Extraordinary Death:
No matter what universe of earth and heaven you rebirth you cannot escape from the defilement of 84,000 of greed, aversion, and delusion unless you prepare yourself the process of dying. For the person who is well prepared, the dying process offers an unequal opportunity to experience what he or she has always been searching for; the subtle penetrating, and supremely blissful mind of clear light. However, such blissful mind of clear light arises automatically during the death process; most of us are unable to take any advantage of it at all. Like our life, our death, without conscious control, and what could have been the gateway to cosmic citizenship to enlightenment and liberation becomes instead a passage into another lifetime confusion and confrontation.
During meditation we can transfer our uncontrollable reaction and recurring confusion; our ordinary experience of death, bardo, impasse and rebirth in the insight experience of a Buddha. Practitioner and teachers of yoga meditation tradition main object of practice is to train themselves not merely to recognize the blissful consciousness at time of death but to awaken this penetrating clear light mind during their life in meditation, thereby gaining complete control over it. From the moment we are born, the sign of death appears. Death shadows our birth. Death have already manifested for every birth from the time we enter the mother's womb until the actual moment of dying. Death itself is a sign of rebirth. We must therefore reflect on the fact of death now. The conscious change of process now is an opportunity to overcome our endless rebirth into archetypal abandonment, shame, betrayal, clinging, and confusion.
Guided rehearsal of meditation training to let go the last moment and open to the next is to die consciously moment to moment. when we take death within, life becomes clear and workable. It makes us pay attention. Focusing on death is a way of becoming fully alive. Because wherever attention is, wherever awareness is, that is where our experiences of life and rebirth arises.
Perhaps first recognition in the process of acknowledging of letting go is when we begin to see that we are not the body. The consciousness is constantly in a process of unfolding. The stages of our goal oriented becoming dissolves into the statelessness of just unqualified being. It is this end of stages. It is like entering a room only to find it has no walls, no doors, and no one inside. Awakening to rebirth is like dream to find out we were never sleep, that sleep too was just part of dream. It is going beyond creation and destruction. You are neither the dancer nor the dance, not even the ground on which the dance is played out, not the music, nor even the electrons of the space between them, nor the perceptions of them, nor the consciousness that you are none of them. At first we may lament its loss; the loss of familiar, the loss ownership all we have including the "me"; we let go of the false security and pain which have defined our imagined territory of the body, mind, and memory. The new emerges as we uncover deeper and deeper levels of "don't know". Not becoming something or someone, just opening to it all, not becoming, just being.
If we do not think about our rebirth now, it will be difficult to prepare about it when it is happening___ as it inevitably will. There is no escape from the death, rebirth, and death. There is no escape from this ordinary life of attachment, anxiety, and delusion which we are born. No being escapes death. We all must die and rebirth according to our karma of mental discipline___ the only question is when will we prepare for Noble extraordinary death and escape the endless ordinary death and rebirth. You only get up from where you fall. You cannot bypass your savage habits of heart with spirituality.
Death and Mindfulness: The mindfulness cultivation of compassionate changes: the forces of food habits of consuming and killing and promoting trade of countless sentient being, our heedless habits of refine foods, drinking, entertainments, exercise, and associated casualties and sickness, will help us practice it at the time of death. Through the cultivation of committed practice now death becomes easy at the actual time of death.
Ordinary birth carries us to disability, old age abandonment, physical and mental illness as even closer to death. Reflect on all the various kinds of illness that exist and new nameless proliferations. Some are chronic lifetime, some occurs suddenly and incurable. Some are gradual onset, so slow we barely notice until they are already advanced, some are managed with intense discomfort. Regardless of ordinary or extraordinary death, the sign of death will begin to manifest. We can all recognize these sign if we train in Mindfulness.
No matter how fearless training you may have to avoid return to Samsara of ordinary birth from any other discipline but Noble Eight-fold Path is bound to re-enter the ordinary misery. There are traditions, many great teacher predict their own death for in advance, they do not necessarily escape the ordinary rebirth unless they are pure in conduct, discriminating, restrained, right living, and diligent. They may have gained great experience in the sign of death and have such mindfulness that they can tell exactly when any of the senses begin to degrade. We are flooded with access to many material things but Dharma teachings and practice. Often we lack the community, guide or the diligence to actually practice the teachings we sometimes receives.
During our lifetime, we pay all our attention to our bodies, education, career, retirement but rarely think about what goes with us when we die. Our earth, water, fire, and wind bodies dissolves with all physical and mental aspect of our lives at the time of clinical brain death. The question is if everything is empty and evaporate at the time of death then what is rebirthing? It is only our habits, desire, and expectations of consciousness that goes with us to rebirth. Our unfinished feelings of consciousness that continues to experience suffering in new packaging. The content remains the same.
Most importantly, it is the consciousness itself that can be transformed into wisdom and vision when integrated with community and skillful guide during the dying process. During the dying process, it is the consciousness that experience everything, including our fears, shame, abandonment, and our past experiences with family friends, and caregivers. When we receive teachings and guide on death and dying, we begin to develop a routine and essential instructions for the time of death. If we do not have the guide to reflect on the teaching of letting go and free ourselves from the bonds of Mara, we are not able to construct alter of mandala, monks and nuns sound healing conditionality for cognitive composure, guided meditation, therapeutic touch, confidence, and adoration to exalted rebirth.
Great rebirth liberation upon hearing to us at the time of death will not be meaningful and lost opportunity unless we take the responsibility. When we take responsibility for ourselves by planning and practicing skillful living funeral in such a way that we'll be able to experience death we envision to our next rebirth. The choice of new parents, food, family, friends, education, employment, community can be included in our action prayer and practice of rehearsal and plan, allowing others to help us when it appropriate. Like anything, if we do not practice with great diligence, having a plan for death is just pretending. If we make great effort now, the sign of death will become signpost for effective application and they will awaken our mindfulness when death is upon us.
When mindfulness is established and endowed with effort over time will naturally transform into effortless mindful effort. Effortless mindfulness endowed with primordial non-dual cognizance, is a synonym for abiding in the view of supreme seat. Everyone can benefit from preparing for death as spiritual practice. We all seek support, skill, and strategy to be the best human being we can be. When we learn how to provide physical and spiritual comfort and support to a loved one while they are dying and help create social healing, we will be given a mutual gift and merits by helping them fulfill their own spiritual aspirations to next journey. It opens us to an opportunity to deep self-reflections as a tool to further our progress and meet other highly realized practitioners. It gives us clarity and certainty about what is perfectly pure path.
