Samatha Meditation:
Samatha practice is the development of dreaming equanimity or dwelling on deep stillness of silence. Bringing activities of six senses into complete stop. This practice does not however, involve dwelling or fixating one’s attention on a particular thing. When mind is fixated on the fields of body’s awareness (dharna) tends to develop momentary access to unconscious mind without losing conscious and subconscious mind.
Samatha meditation is not to develop trance-like states; rather it is to sharpen wholesome perception of mental state in direct experience to see things beyond as they appear to be. Meditation at this level is relating with the conflicts and confusion of our life situations, like using a stone to sharpen a knife, the situation being the stone. The Samatha meditation is the beginning point of the practice. It is a way to sharpen one’s wholesome insight intuition and knowledge. It is a way of relating to rising bodily sensations and thought process of all kinds without dwelling on them or fixating on them in any way.
You are feeling a lot but thinking nothing, and cannot verbalize the feeling in discursive thinking. Because dwelling or fixing comes from an attitude of trying to prove or fix something. It is like trying to maintain the bottomless “me” and “my” conditioned ego. They are seen constantly in relationship to “me” and “my” security. The precision of Samatha practice is extremely powerful to right resolve in relation to the world of five aggregates of “me” projection. It is a kind of scientific research of what you have lost or lack of; otherwise it would be called a search not research.
It is relating to the experiences of life as substances and putting them under the microscope of guided feedback mechanism. The attitude of this practice is not of seeking to attain nirvana, but it is rather of seeing the mechanism of complex samsaric design, how it works, how it relates to us. When the complete picture of samsara, understood from their cause and dependent co-arising mechanism of effect, nirvana becomes redundant. In what is called enlightened state, both samsara and nirvana are freed
